Assistance to Service Personnel

One of the most devastating things that can happen to a service person returning home from a combat zone is to find that he or she no longer has the job left behind when called to serve his/her country.

Over three decades ago, Congress passed the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA) under the United States Department of Defense. This law called for the formation of a cadre’ of volunteers nationwide to act as area chairpersons and ombudsmen for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Then Byram Township Chief of Police Skip Danielson was asked to be the Sussex County chairperson in 1979 and he has served in that position ever since.

He has successfully intervened on behalf of returning and soon to be deployed service personnel. He has also assisted employers who have to comply with USERRA.

In 2008, now Mayor Danielson was commended with an ESGR/USDOD Lifetime Achievement Award at ceremonies at McGuire AFB.

Mayor Danielson is available to assist the veterans returning this spring from Iraq and Afghanistan.
